The Uniqueness of What You Do Means: KEEP GOING

Your uniqueness as a songwriter means that it’s vital to keep going, no matter how difficult the task seems.

Frustrated songwriterJust a quick thought for today: uniqueness.

If you’re like most people, you’re going to have days when you question whether the struggle to write a song is worth it. There are times when it seems so difficult to get your thoughts into a musical form that you’ll wonder if it’s just a waste of time.

If you’re having a day like that today, just think of that word, uniqueness.

In songwriting, uniqueness means that despite an audience’s need to group everything they hear into categories, no two songwriters create music in quite the same way. There is no one writing like you, no one solving musical issues the way you do. And that even goes for songwriters who worry that their music sounds too much like someone else.

Your uniqueness as a songwriter is a vital reason to keep going. When you have a day where the notes just don’t happen, when lyrics sound like garbage, and when your melodies sound like random, aimless wanderings, keep going.

In that sense, songwriting is (and has always been) an activity for risk-takers. With every song you put your heart and soul on display. Every song you write represents a unique solution to musical problem. And not to romanticize the issue to much, to stop is to create silence where your music once was.

If you’re struggling with writer’s block right now, solve your problems and keep going. Your difficulties may discourage you, but can I suggest that your difficulties should also serve to remind you how sweet the reward is when you finally break through and finish your next song.

Because with each song you write, you present something that’s absolutely unique, something no one else could have done. And that, in short, makes it crucial that you keep going.
